“Emotions are essential parts of human intelligence.
Without emotional intelligence, artificial intelligence
will remain incomplete."
Dr. Amit Ray, Compassionate Artificial Intelligence
Emotions and ethics are crucial aspects of human-machine intelligence, and without understanding and incorporating these into artificial intelligence (AI) and hybrid intelligence (HI) systems, AI will be incomplete, not fully capable of interacting with humans and potentially harmful.
Emotions play a vital role in human decision-making, communication, and social interaction. Therefore, developing emotional intelligence in AI is necessary for it to interact with humans in a more natural and effective way. These technologies are also referred to as “emotion AI" which is a sub-discipline of artificial intelligence. In broad terms, it means how machines replicate the way humans think, which measures, understands, simulates, and reacts to human emotions. Emotion AI dates back to at least 1995, when MIT Media Lab professor Rosalind Picard published Affective Computing.
Ethics plays an essential part in emotion AI, and a humanoid with human emotions and ethical behavior would display a strong sense of morality and act in accordance with a set of ethical principles. They would be guided by a desire to do what is right and just, and would likely prioritize the well-being and welfare of others.
To ensure this UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) published a recommendation on the ethics of artificial intelligence in 2022. This recommendation aims to provide guidelines and principles for the development and use of AI in a manner that respects human rights, and promotes human dignity (UNESCO, 2022).
